A one-stop do-everything security suite

Bitdefender Total Security 2015 is the company's full-strength, no-compromise security suite, a powerful mix of antivirus, firewall, browsing protection, parental controls, anti-theft system, file encryption and 2GB of secure online backup space. It's a long list of features, but don't be put off: the new release is all about convenience, and making them as easy to use as possible.
A revamped interface means common tasks (Quick Scan, Update, Safepay, Optimize) are now available with a single click, while other functions are accessible via three main tiles (Protection, Privacy, Tools). Even first-time users will quickly find what they need.
Bitdefender Safepay, the suite's secure browser, is now integrated with Wallet for safer online transactions. Better still, it can now automatically fill in user names, passwords and credit card details, too, often allowing you to pay online in a single step.

There are smaller improvements dotted around the suite: better reports, enhanced parental controls, and a more capable desktop widget, while the spam filter is now entirely cloud-based, improving accuracy and making it more responsive to the latest threats.
Bitdefender's real strength comes in the protection it provides, though. The independent labs typically give it very high marks, and as we write, AV-Comparatives' May 2014 Real-World Protection Test found Bitdefender's package blocked 100% of threats. Only Panda, out of 21 other entrants, could match them.

Verdict:

avast's premier security suite is more powerful than ever

Avast! Premier 2015 is the company's premium security suite, and includes an antivirus engine, firewall, browsing protection and browser cleanup tool.
The suite builds on Avast Internet Security with an automated software update tool, which can not only alert you to new updates, but download and install them as well.
Another big extra is a military-grade data shredder, which can wipe important files, documents and other personal data, and ensure there's no chance they can be recovered.
AccessAnywhere is the other premium feature, and allows you to access your PC over the internet.
Installation is simple and straightforward. Compatibility seems good, too, with the package running happily alongside Norton Internet Security on our test PC.
The program interface is clean and very easy to use. Just click "Smart Scan" and the suite immediately runs a quick check for malware. But it now also scans for missing software updates, runs a new Home Security Network Check (wifi status, weak router passwords etc), and even looks for junk files and poorly configured Windows settings.
If you're in a hurry then you can click "Resolve all" and leave the program to sort out the details.
But if you need more control then Avast! Premier 2015 has plenty to offer. For example, the antivirus engine can check individual files, folders, removable media, commonly infected areas of your PC or the entire system. If that's not enough, you're able to create your own custom scan type by tweaking 30+ settings. And this can be scheduled to run at boot time, daily, weekly, monthly - whenever you like.
The 2015 edition adds SecureDNS to protect you from DNS hijacking, including wifi hotspots and unsecured networks in general.
New support for scanning TLS/SSL protected traffic will detect threats even on HTTPS connections.
Avast DeepScreen now uses hardware virtualisation to run processes in standalone virtual machines, completely isolated from the rest of your system, improving security and detection (you'll need hardware virtualisation to be supported and enabled, of course).
Help has moved completely online, where it's both more complete and more up-to-date.
Avast 2015 SP1 includes these changes:
- Fixed problem with missing NG component under certain circumstances
- Fixed a bug in the keyboard driver causing problems with keyboards
- Better compatibility of the WebShield with some https pages (e.g. spotify, waze, etc.)
- SecureDNS. Better logic of server selection resulting in performance improvements
- Fixed reported crashes

Verdict:

Avast Premier 2015 is a versatile, easy-to-use and configurable security suite. Avast Internet Security 2015 is almost as capable, security-wise, though - it's just missing the automated software updating, data shredder and remote access modules - and could be a better choice for many users.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 (v15.0.2.361) FINAL

A comprehensive, reliable and accurate security suite

Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 is the latest edition of Kaspersky's comprehensive security suite, which delivers antivirus, a firewall, browsing protection, antispam, exploit prevention, parental controls, an ad blocker, parental controls and more.
The latest build now tackles "camfecting", illicit attempts to access a webcam. Kaspersky's Application Control module tracks any programs which try to connect to the webcam, warns you of access attempts and blocks access if necessary.
There's brand new protection from Cryptolocker-type malware. Kaspersky's System Watcher now looks out for suspect programs trying to modify user files, and immediately backs up the originals. If the suite finds the changes were malicious then not only will the malware be removed, but you'll get your original documents back, too. (This isn't infallible - backups will be deleted when Kaspersky Internet Security is closed - but it's still a welcome step forward.)
Elsewhere, the firewall has been extended to check the security of wi-fi hotspots and warn of problems, like a vulnerable network connection or passwords being transferred in plain text. You can even have the program block transfer of unencrypted passwords at all, although this isn't enabled by default (see Settings > Protection Center > Firewall).
One smaller change sees Kaspersky's Safe Money module now block other applications from accessing the web browser clipboard (sounds good, though we're surprised it didn't do that before). And there are a raft of improvements elsewhere: faster startup time, reduced resources consumption, smarter parental controls, improved compatibility, and more.
All this is presented in a simplified, subdued interface. Plain buttons highlight four main task areas: "Scan", "Updater", "Safe Banking" and "Parental Controls". Click any of these and a new pane fades into place, for the most part also keeping options to the minimum. But this is nicely balanced, and experts can also call up more detail very quickly. Click "Show Additional Tools" > "Application Tools", say, and in-depth information on all your running processes is only seconds away.
There's a good set of new features here, then, but Kaspersky Internet Security's real strength lies in its very solid protection. As we write, AV-Comparatives May 2014 Real-World Protection Test found Kaspersky blocked 99.9% of attacks (and even the 0.1% didn't result in a compromised system): check out the latest scores here.

Verdict:

Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 offers some welcome additions, in particular the automatic document backups, webcam and wifi protection. We like the new interface, and as usual the suite provides rock solid protection.

Norton Internet Security 2015

Description

Norton Security 2015 sports a major UI redesign.

For years Norton has been synonymous with security, and aside from a slight name change, Norton Security 2015 continues its fine tradition of offering comprehensive protection for PCs worldwide. (And it now covers Macs, iOS and Android devices, too - up to five in total.)
There’s everything you’d expect in such a security suite: strong antivirus protection that monitors files and programs not just for known threats but for suspicious behaviour too, helping block malware before it can gain a foothold on your system.
There’s the firewall, of course, silently blocking attacks from both outside and inside your PC. Web Safety components check the links you click to make sure they’re safe to visit, while downloaded files are screened and checked for both security and reliability.
Norton Security 2015 also provides a spam filter, password manager/form filler, network monitor, startup program manager, bootable repair disc option, performance-related tools and more.
What’s new in version 2015? The most obvious change is a brand new user interface, based on the Norton 360 interface but updated to blend in better with the modern look of Windows 8. However, the 2015 release also debuts what Symantec terms its "next generation" anti-malware engine, which evaluates and offers protection against threats in real time using the cloud to reduce definition files by up to 80 per cent.
Other improvements include intelligent boot-time protection, more aggressive threat detection heuristics and automatic aggressive botnet scanning triggers. Smart data leak protection has been added along with improved Norton Community Watch integration.
Browser protection is now delivered without the need for installing browser plug-ins, while protection against socially engineered attacks has also been tightened.
The SONAR engine – used to detect brand new threats – has been improved alongside performance tweaks.
Please note, Norton Security replaces Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security and Norton 360. There is no direct upgrade path from those products to Norton Security - you'll have to buy a new licence - but of course they will still protect you until the end of your current subscription.

Verdict:

Time will tell if the new changes deliver better security for your PC, but it’s good to see Symantec continuing to evolve its product with increased protection and a slicker user interface.
